We did it. The Heron's Nest is home.
Six years ago, Shared Spaces Foundation began stewarding a small, vacant parcel in the West Duwamish Greenbelt — land that had sat neglected since the 1990s, used as a dumping ground, less than a mile from the Duwamish longhouse.
This past Saturday, that work came full circle. We formally returned 3.56 acres of land to the Duwamish Tribe, presenting the legal deed and title during a ceremony filled with community, culture, and celebration.
As Ken Workman, Duwamish Tribal Council member and descendant of Chief Seattle, put it: "A long time ago the Duwamish people lived here, and then they were told they were not allowed. But now we are back."
This project was never just about acreage. It was about acknowledging harm, doing the long, unglamorous work of remediation and restoration, and returning what should never have been taken in the first place. We're proud to have partnered with Duwamish Tribal Services, the Real Rent Duwamish Campaign, and the Duwamish Solidarity Group to make this happen.
The work isn't over — for the Duwamish, whose pursuit of federal recognition continues, and for us, as we turn our attention to our next restoration project on the island of Hawai'i. But today, we're taking a moment to celebrate what community, patience, and partnership can accomplish.
