Yesterday I have found out, that one of our regular customers, John R. has passed away from cancer.
John has been our supplier of best Styrofoam, and he used to come in order to make copies of newspaper articles or comic strips which he would then mail to his friends.
He always used to carry a crochet towel, a pen knife and a tiny brown leather coin wallet with him. He would then take his copies and move to the corner to finish his project. He had his rituals about my business that were endearing and respectful as opposed to imposing.
He would make an effort to remember the names of all of the people whom at different times he would see behind the counter.
It seems like he liked previous owners, but was excited about the change in our business, and was genuinely rooting for us to succeed.
He engaged me in conversations, reminding me that I know more English than:" How can I help you today?".
And he prompted me to watch "Nomadland", saying that he saw similarities between protagonist and me. While recognizing "Nomadland"'s undoubtful originality I didn't like it. But it was wonderful to feel that a stranger more or less, noticed you and outstretched his hand to help you climb out of the box that most people need you to sit in for them to feel safe.
Even after all the losses that I had, the totality and suddenness (yes, I know it's not a word) of death does not seize to surprise me.
John would always make my day better. I will miss him terribly. And if I can't stop crying, I cannot even imagine, how it is for John's wife, Diane. How orphaned you must feel.

FedEx Express has advised us that they will not be picking up or delivering to our area today due to weather.
