✨The holidays are a time for joy and togetherness, but they can also bring unique challenges—especially when it comes to food and navigating social settings.
In this post, we're sharing strategies to help you find balance during the holidays. ✨
How To Navigate Disordered Eating During the Holiday Season:
1. Cope Ahead: Identify potentially triggering situations in advance and problem-solve how to manage them effectively. Focus on approaches that align with your values.
2. Eat Regularly: Avoid skipping meals in preparation for holiday events – this can increase vulnerability to disordered eating patterns. Challenge all-or-nothing thinking patterns and remind yourself that enjoying holiday food is both healthy and normal.
3. Set Boundaries: Let other know that comments about food, weight, dieting, and the like are off-limits to create a safe space. If triggering topics come up, redirect the conversation elsewhere or step away when needed.
4. Use Distress Tolerance Skills: Keep a “coping kit” on hand with comforting tools like music, essential oils, fidget toys, or a journal. Distractions like games or grounding exercises can help manage stress in the moment.
5. Practice Self-Validation: Acknowledge that it’s okay if things don’t go perfectly. Celebrate small victories and take time to reflect on what is going well during the holidays.
6. Reach Out for Support: Lean on trusted friends, family, or professionals for help when needed. Share your challenges and ask for assistance navigating uncomfortable situations.
