Huskies for Equitable Sustainability (HuES) 10/15/2024

Huskies for Equitable Sustainability (HuES) is a new opportunity for students to actively engage in the UW's sustainability efforts, organized by UW Sustainability and the Campus Sustainability Fund (CSF). We'll be holding monthly sessions open to students from all UW campuses and departments. These sessions will include information about current sustainability efforts across the UW, connections with RSOs and other groups working on sustainability, volunteer opportunities and more. They will also be a venue for you to ask UW staff questions and provide feedback on what you'd like to see happen for sustainability on campus.

The first meeting is Thursday, October 24 in HUB room 145.

Congratulations to the Society for Ecological Restoration - UW Chapter for being named the 2024 Husky Sustainability Legacy Award winner! The legacy awards recognize sustained, long-standing impact, and the SER student group has been working to remove invasive species and restore the campus landscape with native plants since 2008. These efforts go beyond just replacing vegetation to thinking deeply about how our campus landscape is used and how to integrate the ecological restoration into also providing welcoming spaces for the campus community.

Congratulations to the UW Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine on receiving a 2024 Husky Sustainability Award! The department was represented by Dr. Andrew Walters at the award ceremony, but this was earned by a department-wide effort to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from anesthetic gasses at UW Medicine hospitals. The department has discontinued use of desflurane, an anesthetic gas with high global warming potential;
advocated to decommission wasteful central nitrous oxide systems and switch to more cost-effective and environmentally preferred portable cylinders for nitrous oxide administration;
and developed, in partnership with Epic Sytems, an internal sustainability dashboard that tracks the emissions rates of individual anesthesiologists to inform how to reduce the environmental impact of their practice.

Congratulations to Becky Ryser, a staff member with UW Surplus Public Store, who was named one of the 2024 Husky Sustainability Award winners! She has implemented several initiatives to advance sustainability at UW Surplus and worked to find new ways to divert items out of the landfill, including finding groups who can re-purpose specific items or specialized recycling vendors. She oversaw the launch of an online storefront, and partnered with campus mail for office supply deliveries to increase the reach of Surplus and encourage more departments to think about re-use before purchasing new. She also serves as the face of Surplus at many outreach events, educating people on Surplus’ services and how it supports the UW’s sustainability goals.
