We bring our diverse identities to the 4th of July, this American picnic. I am proud to be so many things, as well as an American. Remembering my Polish and German ancestors, immigrants through Ellis Island. Thinking of my Scottish/English grandfather, who came as an immigrant another time. Thinking of my friends, gay, straight, trans. Thinking of my friends true to their many faiths: Muslim, Christian, Jewish, spiritual but not religious, Sikh, Quaker, Athiest…and on. United in love and service. Remembering my family and friends with diverse racial identities. We all belong here. Build bridges, not walls.
