2026 Police Week: Message from Chief Barnes 05/15/2026

Today is Peace Officers Memorial Day, which is part of National Police Week.

National Police Week is a tradition that stretches back more than 60 years in our country. Police Week is an opportunity to pay respects to officers who died in the line of duty and honor current and retired police officers.

“The people who pursue a career in police work are committed to integrity and bravery,” said Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes. “Police officers work tirelessly to protect our communities, uphold justice, and put survivors and victims’ first – all while knowing the dangers that might lie ahead.”

In the history of the Seattle Police Department, 60 officers made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our city.

“Today, we remember the officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, and we honor the families, friends, and colleagues who continue carrying that loss with them every day,” said Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson. “Public service asks a great deal of the people who choose it, and moments like this are an important reminder that a family and communities are forever changed by that sacrifice. Seattle is grateful for the service of the officers we remember today, and we stand with the people who continue to mourn them.”

We will pay tribute to the Seattle Police Officers who died in the line of duty during a private memorial on Friday, May 15th.

“In Washington D.C., there is one memorial that will never be complete, that’s the police memorial wall,” said Chief Barnes. “Etched on that wall are the names of officers from across the country. While this memorial sadly grows every year, what also grows is the love and support we give one another as fellow police officers. We will never forget the lives we have lost.”

On Friday, all flags on department buildings will be flown at half-staff through the end of the day. Officers are also authorized to wear mourning bands on Friday according to policy.

“I can never fully thank our Seattle Police officers for their service. I appreciate them and stand beside them each and every day,” said Chief Barnes.
