According to a quarterly Seattle police staffing report, there was a small but significant jump in the number of trans and nonbinary applicants to SPD last year. This is somewhat surprising given the department’s shameful handling of the May 24 protests in 2025.

Are trans cops a sign of progress?

Last year, King County Sheriff’s Captain Jamie Deer, one of the few openly trans cops in the country, made a Facebook post telling Trump supporters not to follow him.

The King County Police Officers Guild leaked the incident to talk radio goblin Jason Rantz who blasted KCSO leadership for its “hypocrisy.” Rantz pointed out that the deputy previously fired a detective for expressing normal conservative opinions (namely that it’s good to m*rder protesters with your car).

He tried to say that claim that was a “double standard” to fire someone for posting “All Lives Splatter” in response to two protesters getting run over, but not a captain for calling Trump racist, homophobic, and transphobic.

A deputy named Clark Matthews filed a complaint against Deer about the post and also told investigators that Deer stormed out of a roll call meeting after Matthews misgendered him. No one remembers this. Deer filed a complaint against Matthews for dishonesty.

Being the police chief of Clyde Hill, a Seattle suburb where the median income is $250k, was a pretty sweet gig for Kyle Kolling.

The perks of policing an Eastside suburb that’s essentially one large golf course:

But the gods punish hubris. Kolling was undone when he colluded with the city’s police union to stop an investigation into his golf buddy Officer Cameron Hanson. Kolling was forced into retirement at the end of May, but the city kept the details secret.

The so-called Office of Police Accountability continues to excuse, explain away, sanction, and justify the violence done against Seattle’s LGBTQ+ community last May. Shortly before the start of Pride Month, the OPA released another report exonerating a sergeant for brutally beating a protest medic arrested without probable cause.

The OPA initially found Sgt. David Adams used excessive force when he punched the man eight times. However, Adams’ commanders convinced the OPA to change its findings. Also, the OPA never even investigated allegations that Adams used force on the man while handcuffed.

To date, the only allegation sustained against any officer from May 24 was a written reprimand against Officer Brian Muoio for crashing his bike directly into a protester. In another case, Officer Matthew Clark was given a training referral for shooting a protester in the back as he fled.

Pro-tip the second: Don’t bring lies to a fact fight.

Normally, if a chud went after a cop, we’d treat it like a “Let them fight” situation. But this time around, the cop is collateral damage to a larger, well-funded assault on trans people, so we’re picking a side.
