Kris Carlos | Sasamba
Sterling Silver, brass, copper
Artist Statement: “Sasamba” is the Filipino word for Praying Mantis. This was part of a micro series of insect related pieces that was inspired by a beetle flying in my room. I wanted to create something very whimsical, a take on cabinet of curiosities, fairies, and a play on puppetry.
Artist Bio: Kris Carlos (b. 1985, Manila) started her smiling journey in 2018 when she took a basic silversmithing class at The Studio 925 in Manila where she was later asked to be an apprentice for the studio, and eventually became an instructor. Kris is known for combining her sculptures with jewelry and like to experiment with painting and coloring metal. In 2023, to further her smithing skills, she took a short course in chasing and repousse in Aoyama School of Jewellery in Tokyo, Japan.

Sara Elgohary | The Spot of Tea Ring, Part 1 of the Impractical Teapot Series
Copper, Sterling Silver, Brass
Artist Statement: The Impractical Teapot Series came into being during a road trip discussion with friends, where absurd ideas naturally thrive. Initially, most of these ideas were meant for ceramics, but the reminder of the Battle of the Rings sparked the idea for a metal version. This piece, my first metal teapot, was crafted with tools improvised to adjust to the smaller scale and giddy feeling you get when working through a new process while only sort of knowing what you’re doing but doing it anyway.
Artist Bio: I am a mixed media sculptor and jeweler with an interest in creating work that explores our interactions as people with objects around us, specifically with the personal value placed on inherently non-valuable objects. I explore these connections by creating ornate containers and vessels for said objects. I received a BFA in Spatial Art from SJSU, where I studied woodworking, ceramics, and non-ferrous metalsmithing among other media which I use to create ornate housing for mundane objects.
