Let's talk cold hard cash! Right now, the average cost of open heart surgery is around $100,000, and that is without complications (it can be more). Currently, Medicare covers this at 80%, meaning you are responsible for 20 percent. So, 20% of $100,000 is $20,000. That is how much you are responsible for with insurance!!! Now let's keep going. You have to have cardiac rehab after. That can cost up to $245 (depending on program). Once again Medicare pays at 80% and you cover 20 percent. So, 20% of 245 is $49.
