It's rare to observe wildlife behavior that falls outside the watchful eyes of humans, but one of our hunters managed to do just that! This video appears to show a species of weasel, possibly a long-tailed weasel (Neogale frenata) or fisher cat (Pekania pennanti) rolling and rubbing its body across the top of a fallen tree. Many members of the Mustelid family, including weasels, otters, fishers, and minks, exhibit this type of behavior, which is a type of scent communication. Weasels have well-developed a**l scent glands, which produce a strong, musky odor. They also have smaller glands on their skin, along their belly, flanks, and cheeks! Individuals will rub these glands over surfaces, leaving a distinctive scent that warns would-be intruders that they have entered someone else's territory. 🎥: A. Sellards/USFWS 12/03/2022
