Mason County artist Jim Dunithan doesn't do just one thing. He paints, sculpts, carves, and experiments, chasing whatever catches his eye, whether that's a rock, a shadow, a memory, or a brand-new material he's never tried. From black-and-white oil portraits with texture you can feel, to Picasso-style whimsy, to castles and dragons pulled from his travels, every wall of his studio tells a different story.

In this piece, Jim traces his lifelong love of creating, back to a childhood drawing contest with his brother, and shares why he still refuses to settle into a single style. He talks about learning to paint rocks just because he didn't know how, turning happy accidents into finished pieces, and even the nickname the community gave him: the "lost tractor guy."

For Jim, art isn't about deadlines or dollars. It's about joy, and about the connection that happens when a piece lands exactly where it belongs, like the time he handed a painting to a stranger simply because she lit up over it. "If you do it because you love to do it," he says, "that's why I do it."
