FRANCES TWO BIRDS was 20 years old in 1925. The artistic portrait became the cover photo for "A Northern Cheyenne Album: Photographs by Thomas B. Marquis." Frances’s father was Peter Two Birds. She married Hector Knows His Guns, a man of primarily Crow descent, and she was then known as Frances Two Birds Knows His Guns. She was an early speaker of English, and gave birth to nine children.

Thomas Marquis was a Montana doctor, photographer, and historian. His volumes on the Battle of the Little Big Horn are studied today. Marquis learned Plains Indian sign language. He interviewed and photographed elders who had been present at the Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876, including some of the people who had been photographed decades earlier by L.A. Huffman.
