Sam Elliott was born on August 9, 1944 in Sacramento, California, and today he rides into his 81st birthday still commanding every frame. From humble beginnings as a guest‑stoic in classics like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and Gunsmoke (1972), he drew first blood in leading roles with Frogs (1972) and broke through as the reflective lifeguard in Lifeguard (1976).

His unforgettable turn as the drift‑wood cowboy in Mask (1985) cemented his status, then he brought Louis L’Amour’s legends to life in The Quick and the Dead (1987) and earned a Golden Globe nod for Conagher (1991). Veteran praise followed for Buffalo Girls (1995), Gettysburg (1993) and the enigmatic Stranger in The Big Lebowski (1998).

In recent years, Elliott’s deep drawl has echoed from the Academy‑nominated warmth of A Star Is Born (2018) to the gritty frontier of 1883 (2021–22), winning him a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance. He’s also thrilled fans in Justified, The Ranch and The Hero.
