Pioneer photographer EVELYN CAMERON led an extraordinary life. She was raised in an affluent English family with servants. In 1891, she and husband Ewen established their ranch in Eastern Montana. Evelyn was independent and industrious. To earn money, she hosted boarders, sold vegetables, and learned photography. She wrote home, boasting of not having servants and enclosed photographs of her doing ranch chores. Note the English pancake saddle without horn.
The seminal volume on Evelyn Cameron is Donna Lucey’s “Photographing Montana 1894-1928.” Before writing the book, Donna Lucey transcribed 35 years of diaries and printed thousands of photographs from Cameron’s glass-plate negatives. The extraordinary volume contains 170 photographs. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.
