When the staff at the Gillette Animal Shelter accepted Bean from a feral colony, they took one look at him and knew he needed more than a standard shelter stay. There were really only two humane options for this tiny guy: compassionate euthanasia... or a trip to SCSCR.

Of course we said yes. (Even though we're full. We know. We have a problem.)

Bean is a Manx, and when he arrived, diarrhea was pouring out of him. Sorry for the mental image, but Bean certainly wasn't embarrassed, so neither are we. 😅 Thankfully, antibiotics and dewormer have already made a huge difference.

But that wasn't even his biggest problem.

For an adult cat, Bean is *tiny.* He weighs just 4 pounds. We estimate he's around 5 years old, but his mouth looked like it belonged in a veterinary textbook. Every single tooth, except his two lower canine teeth, was completely rotten. Bean lost the genetic lottery when it came to dental health, and judging by the condition of his mouth, he'd been living with excruciating pain for a very long time.

Yesterday, Dr. Kathy evicted every one of those rotten teeth. We can't imagine how much relief he must already be feeling. For the first time in years, Bean is going to be able to heal without a mouth full of constant pain.

Bean does have one more quirk. We suspect he has a mild case of Manx syndrome. He uses his litter box like a good little gentleman... but occasionally leaves behind a few surprise "bonus poops" in his bed or on his shelf. Longtime followers may remember another delightfully weird cat named Glenn, who had the exact same habit. Some cats collect toys. Bean apparently collects... well... never mind.

He's still figuring out that humans aren't so scary. Every interaction begins with a hiss before he remembers, "Oh wait... these are the people who give the good chin scratches." We have a feeling it won't be long before that hiss disappears, and we're left with nothing but a tiny, almost-toothless lovebug.

Welcome to your second chance, Bean. ❤️

If you'd like to help cover Bean's medical care, donations are always appreciated. Every dollar helps cats like Bean get the fresh start they deserve.

Meet Pete! We'd like to introduce our newest pirate recruit.

Pete was born with **syndactyly** on all four paws, which is a first for us! Instead of individual toes, he has just a couple on each foot. The result is that his legs end in what are essentially adorable little peg legs... if peg legs came with paw pads and an endless supply of kitten zoomies.

Despite his unusual feet, Pete doesn't seem to have gotten the memo that he's supposed to be limited. He tears around his kennel, plays with toys, and generally behaves like every other young kitten we've met. We're still learning what his long-term mobility will look like, especially when it comes to climbing and jumping, but so far he's making a compelling argument that "normal" is overrated.

His crew is currently accepting applications for First Mate, treat dispenser, and professional chin scratcher.

If you'd like to help support Pete and the other special-needs cats in our care, donations are always appreciated. We have a feeling this little swashbuckler has quite the adventure ahead of him. 🏴‍☠️❤️

Our Featured Feline Friday this week is Sealy!

She's the kind of cat who's perfectly content to curl up for a nap while everyone else is showing off, which means she's easy to overlook during adoption hours. But anyone who takes a moment to meet her discovers a sweet, friendly, playful girl who would love a family of her own.

Sealy arrived with four adorable kittens (who are also looking for homes!), and now it's her turn to find a happily ever after.

This weekend, Sealy is spending time at Petco in Sheridan. If you're out and about, stop in and say hello. She may not be the loudest cat in the room, but we think she's worth slowing down for.

Apply to adopt at sheridancatrescue.org/adopt.

💙 And don't forget: All adult cat adoption fees are WAIVED through the rest of this month!
