The Sachem Public Library began in 1914 in Lake Ronkonkoma with a modest collection of just 18 books, all of which focused on women’s suffrage!
By 1961, rapid population growth created a need for expanded library services. Voters quickly approved a new school district public library, and the Sachem Public Library opened its doors in 1966—the same building that continues to serve the community today!
A special thank you to the Ronkonkoma Chamber of Commerce for providing the pictures and information. Our libraries across the Island have such rich history and amazing stories that nee to be told.
