A backed-up septic tank causes a corresponding reaction in the drain field, often flooding it with sludge and other unpleasant materials. Most often septic system failures are a result of an outdated system, bad filters, broken or missing drain field pipes, hardened or frozen drain fields, or tree roots or other obstructions cutting oxygen to the drain field.

Keep in mind that any landscaping or plants in and around your drain field should appear just as healthy as the surrounding areas. If you begin to notice that the drain field is becoming overly green, this is a sign of an issue: probably that the wastewater is rising underground rather than leaching properly.
