In honor of Mother’s Day, I’m going to share some inspiration from my own mother. She moves very easily from low level positions, even at 80 years old! Granted, the Okinawan people and Okinawan lifestyle are known for being incredibly healthy.
Okinawa is one of the blue zone wonders of the world. Being a trainer for 15 years in the western world, the most common movement pattern I see go out the window as people age is a sit-to-stand pattern.
If you go to my mom’s home, there are not too many chairs. You will most likely sit on the floor. Continuing this movement helps keep the movement. The “Asian Squat” is a common position you’ll see locals in Okinawa in a lot chilling at home or waiting for the bus. It’s very healthy for keeping mobile hips and ankles, and relieves pressure from the lower back.
I rarely hear my mother complain about joint or body pain, and I believe this cultural habit of a deep seated squat daily multiple times a day throughout your whole life is huge part of it. Stay moving, it will keep you healthy. My mom is proof of this 🙂
