Did you know that stress and trauma live in the body?
Just like our minds hold onto stories, our bodies do, too. The problem with chronic stress or traumatic experiences living in our bodies is that we don’t always have the words or language to express them.
📖 Trauma survivors will often try and create a “cover story” to help give some explanation to what they’re experiencing, but it’s not the full story, because their bodies have so much more to share.
🫀 The racing heart, blood rushing to our muscles, disappearing appetite - they’re all very real physical responses that keep us safe and help us prepare for what we need to do - like run away or fight. Which are great things that our bodies do!
☝🏽 But if we don’t approach trauma holistically, many of us can get stuck in these heightened responses and it gets more and more difficult to naturally relax. Always being “on guard” can have long-term effects on our bodies, leading to chronic pain and illness.
🎉 Here’s the good news, though: we don’t have to accept that it’s inevitable! Because trauma lives in the body, we usually need a body-based approach to begin to heal. Enter: yoga.
🧘🏽♀️ Yoga has a number of health benefits, especially in decreasing depression and anxiety and helping people to relieve stress. And trauma-informed yoga brings together brain development, biology, and psychology- the intersectionality of the mind and body.
It can:
→ build your ability to cope
→ bring balance to your nervous system
→ learn to feel safe in your body
→ manage your discomfort
→ expand your capacity for joy & exploration
