I love this view looking down the Potomac River to the Kennedy Center. The burger I had for lunch was delicious, too.

Noyack is a sleepy little hamlet in the Hamptons of Long Island, New York. The client joked about their neighborhood being more down-to-earth than the rest of the Hamptons. He said, "We live in the 'hood of the Hamptons".
I designed the driveway, all the hardscape, and the plantings around 2004. It's one of my favorite projects because the client said, "We've seen your work, and we know you'll do a great job." And they let me do everything I wanted to do. Of course, I worked extra hard on the project to exceed their expectations.
It was a weird property because you pass the backyard and pool as you enter. The strange orientation is because of setbacks, topography, and soil structure. When the trees are in leaf, you don't notice you're driving past the backyard.

One reason I often visit a site during the design process is to see it in different seasons. When you see a site in the winter, you have an idea of what it's like when the trees are foliated, but you're not totally sure. After visiting the site last week, I now know that my landscape design will provide adequate screening once it matures.
My goal was to provide my clients with a sense of privacy without creating the typical green wall of evergreens along the back fence.

One of the first things I learned as a landscape architecture student was never to create ambush points for bad guys. Yet we see dangerous hardscape and planting design like this one all over the place. This is a path to a county garage in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland.
The steps, garage, evergreen tree, and six-foot-tall shrubs being so close to the walking path create a deadly area that can only be viewed from where I took this photo.
As a landscape architect with extensive experience in urban environments, I always get side-eye when I critique another site designer's future ambush corridors on paper. I'm comfortable being labeled nitpicky when it comes to safety; an LA is supposed to dig deeper.
