Bella, Branding, and the Power of Simplicity
I have a Boston Terrier named Bella. She doesn’t do complexity. She responds to tone, clarity, and one-word commands.
Turns out, people aren’t that different.
If your message is too clever, too long, or too vague, people don’t respond.
Customers don’t need ten paragraphs. They need to know what you offer, how it helps, and what to do next.
StoryBrand teaches us to keep it simple and clear.
That’s what we work on in the Small Group Marketing Cohort—writing words that get results, not awards.
If your website sounds like it’s trying too hard, maybe it is. Let’s fix it.

The Marketing Mistake That Sounds a Lot Like Me in a Band
I’ve been playing drums for over 45 years. I love Metallica. Disturbed. Anything that shakes your ribcage.
One of the best lessons I ever learned behind a drum kit was this: don’t overplay. Serve the song.
Most business owners are overplaying. They talk too much about themselves. Their experience. Their process. Their features.
But customers don’t care about your solo. They want a rhythm they can follow.
That’s why the StoryBrand framework works. It teaches you to stop making your business the star of the show and start making your customer the hero.
I run a Small Group Marketing Cohort where we do this together. We strip back the noise and find the story that actually sells.
So if your marketing sounds more like a drum solo than a solid groove, maybe it’s time to tighten up the band.

I’ll tell you what. I’ve come across hundreds of business owners that dream of spinning a tale as captivating as a Southern sunset. They yearn for a brand that resonates, one that people hold in high regard. The ones getting it right realize that the story told about their business holds the key to their success.
Great brands, like a sweet tea on a sweltering summer day, create a buzz that's hard to resist.
But let's set aside our business hats, momentarily, and dive into the art of storytelling.
First and foremost, it's crucial to grasp that stories follow time-honored formulas that tug at our hearts and minds. Maybe you’ve heard the saying, “Win their hearts and their thoughts will follow.”
Storytellers have been weaving these time-tested tales for generations, and they're as dependable as sweetgrass baskets crafted by local artisans.
Think of storytelling like you’d think of the Nashville music scene. The difference between a cacophony of sounds and a soul-stirring melody lies in adhering to certain principles. Similarly, a story is the artful arrangement of events in a specific order, designed to intrigue, captivate, and compel folks to lean in closer.
There are a few storytelling formulas out there. My favorite is the StoryBrand structure, a real fusion of some of the most beloved narratives. It’s the same story structure you’ll find gracing blockbuster movies like The Revenant, Hacksaw Ridge, and Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s the kind of structure that leaves audiences spellbound.
How have you used story to build your brand? What tips do you have for others?
