Update on the 1st Gen Toyota RAV4! The original engine only has 78,000 miles on it, but it was driven low on oil by the 2nd owner. After spinning a rod bearing last year it has sat in my driveway unused. Later this summer (after finishing big projects on the Dodge Ram and VW Beetle, I want to get the RAV4 back to its former glory.
So I have some big decisions to make. I could rebuild the original 3SFE engine or swap in a 3SGE or 3SGTE… both which would increase power dramatically. This is going to be Marley’s car in 2027, so it needs to be reliable.
I’ve rebuilt aircooled VW engines and small engines but this job is out of my zone of competency 😅… so I’m taking my sweet time deciding what the best option is. The one thing I’m sure of though… it’s worth it to save this car. It’s very cool with a manual, only 78k miles and rare extras like a rear L*D.
What are your thoughts? If you’ve done this before or are in the PNW and can help me out I’d appreciate it! Whatever I choose, I’ll document it to help save other 1st gen RAV4s… because they are very cool cars.
