Urban Tails
Structured dog daycare. Full and half day training. Basic and advanced obedience. Boarding and grooming.
Real dog training is slow, quiet and boring to watch, thats why all the training vids on social media are sped up and have a dynamic soundtrack. If you watch this boring video you'll notice I'm not super animated or talking much. I'm trying to get Buffy comfortable with a lead on and I don't need to add stress to an already stressful situation for her. I introduced the lead in two seperate sessions yesterday and started applying pressure with it today. She would respond the way most puppies and dogs do when something is around their throat with fighting and thrashing so I didn't want her to her to feel any pressure at first. I let her get use to the feel and weight of it and just drag it. Today I held it and walked. She's 12 weeks old today and has a vet appointment coming up. I did not want her first experience with a lead to be in a bright, scary exam room with strangers. That's a lot and I don't think it's fair to her. Let her deal with scary situations one at a time so that she can overcome them and move on. A lot of times I think we talk in ways that dogs don't understand and we try to comfort them verbally. Dog's don't know what "It's ok baby." means. What Buffy does know is that situations with me are slow and safe and that neither one of us needs to get worked up much by something new. She did a good job and I'm proud of her for being the bravest. ♥️ If you find yourself and your dog in a stressful situation, ask yourself if you have practiced dealing with it in a slow, safe, quiet way before the event and try to remember that what you do matters and what you say does not.
