NEW CALIFORNIA LEGISLATION PROTECTS FELINE WELFARE:

As of January 1, 2026, California will implement a law prohibiting veterinarians from declawing cats, except in instances where medically necessary due to injury or disease.

This legislation represents a significant milestone in the advancement of feline welfare.

It is noteworthy that the California Veterinary Medical Association opposed AB 867, despite the prevalence of veterinarians who object to the procedure. Under the new law, veterinarians are safeguarded from pressure by pet owners to perform unnecessary surgeries. By prioritizing animal welfare over financial interests, California guarantees the protection of cats from unwarranted harm. Research has consistently demonstrated that declawing can lead to adverse behavioral consequences, including litter box avoidance and biting due to pain. We applaud California for prioritizing the welfare of cats and alleviating concerns about unnecessary declawing procedures.
