The identities of the three firefighters who lost their lives during the tragic burnover on what began as the Knowles Fire and later merged into the Snyder Fire have now been publicly released.

The incident occurred during an interagency wildland firefighting response near the Utah–Colorado border and has deeply affected the firefighting community across the United States.

* Age: 27
* Hometown: Glendale, Arizona
* One of the youngest members of the crew.
* Died while engaged in active wildfire suppression operations.

* Hometown: Warrior, Alabama
* A dedicated wildland firefighter who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.

What Happened

* The firefighters were assigned to the Knowles Fire on Saturday.
* During rapidly changing fire conditions, they became trapped in a burnover, one of the most dangerous situations wildland firefighters can encounter.
* The Knowles Fire subsequently merged with the larger Snyder Fire.
* Two additional firefighters survived but suffered injuries and remain hospitalized.
* Federal and state agencies have begun a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the burnover, as is standard following firefighter line-of-duty fatalities.

A Community in Mourning

Across the nation, fire departments, federal land management agencies, state forestry organizations, and local communities are lowering flags, wearing black mourning bands, and honoring these three firefighters. Their sacrifice serves as a solemn reminder of the extraordinary risks wildland firefighters accept every fire season.
