What aspect of charter school authorizing do you find most challenging?

- Is it determining the quality of a charter school application?
- How to distinguish between a temporary setback and a deeper issue that requires intervention?
- Or perhaps it’s identifying if a school merits renewal?

These decisions have real implications for students, families, and school communities. They also require authorizers to have clear systems, strong oversight practices, and a thorough understanding of performance expectations.

These were the questions we had in mind when developing an on-demand professional development series for charter school authorizers. The online course explores key authorizing responsibilities from performance contracts to oversight to intervention strategies and renewal decisions. It shares pragmatic guidance from experienced practitioners for authorizers of any experience level.

A new survey in North Carolina asked principals - what do YOU need to do your best work?

Across 11 districts and 400 leaders surveyed, 90% reported they feel trusted and valued, but they also say they are stretched thin. Most leaders work 55–60 hours a week. Many don't have enough time for their own learning or to connect with fellow leaders. Over 60% say better data will guide their decisions.

Supporting school leaders isn't just good policy. It's how we build schools where everyone from students to teachers to leaders can flourish.
