Post P Part H Abraham sent his servant Eliezer to get a wife for Isaac
In this analogy, Abraham is a type of God the Father. Isaac is a type of Jesus Christ. Eliezer the servant is a type of the Holy Ghost. Rebecca is a type of the Church.
Interesting that the Bible does not say much about Rebecca, accept for her and her Her willingness to volunteer and water ten camels and leave home to take the long trip to meet her husband to be. But they had a lot to say about Isaac, her husband. That tells me the message is not about the church, it is all about Christ. And it tells me how important is in being His Church. And that He beautifies the meek with salvation.
Abraham turns his attentions to finding a wife for their son, Isaac. Knowing as he does that Isaac is meant to be his not just any woman will do. Nor may Isaac leave the Holy Land for any reason. Therefore, Abraham charges his trusty servant (a type of the Holy Spirit) to select a wife for Isaac from among Abraham’s own kin back in Aram-naharaim. If the woman the servant finds Abraham assures him he has at least done his duty. The servant swears to uphold Abraham’s requests and he sets off, with ten camels and an array of gifts in tow.
When the servant arrives at the well on the outskirts of town, he turns to God for direction. He sets a sign for himself: (type of prophecy) the woman who not only offers him water, but his camels, too, is the right one for Isaac. Before he even completes his prayer, the servant spies young Rebecca, daughter of Bethuel and granddaughter of Abraham’s brother, Nahor. He asks her for water, and she replies by giving it to him, then in humility watering all his ten camels. Watching her work, the servant becomes convinced that this woman is destined to marry his master’s son, and he brings forth the jewelry which he carried for that purpose. He asks who her family is and if they will take him in overnight. She confirms her identity and invites him to stay with her family. The servant responds by thanking God for bringing him to the right place.
The Israel Bible discusses the significance of the caravan which the servant brought with him. The camel earned his name because it is “able to survive in the absence of water for many months.” How fitting that this symbol of independence carried back Rebecca, who made an independent choice to join Isaac in the Holy Land of Israel! Ten camel represents a lot of power to carry a little women and her substance on that long trip. What a beautiful diagram of God's People.
Post O Part G Isaac a Type of Jesus Christ had twins in birth
God told Abraham to offer his only begotten Son of Promise as a living sacrifice. It was a type of God the Father offering His only begotten Son for the sacrifice of sin. Therefore, we that are saved, are of the seed of Isaac. (Gen. 17: 19) That is, a seed of faith. (Romans 9: 7, Hebrews 11: 18)
Isaac married his beloved Rebecca. (She a type of the Church explained in next post) They too, have two sons, Esau and Jacob. These two boys lay out a pattern of flesh and grace, as did Ishmael and Isaac.
Abraham, father of the Jewish nation, did not want his son Isaac to marry one of the pagan Canaanite women in the area, so he sent his servant Eliezer (type of the Holy Ghost) to his homeland to find a wife for Isaac. (type of the Church) When the servant arrived, he prayed that the right girl would not only offer him a drink of water from the well but offer to water his ten camels too. A Camel is capable of drinking 30 gallons in under 15 minutes. Eliezer had ten camels, that could come to 300 gallon of water for the little lady to draw out of the well. A very big task.
Rebekah came out with her water jar and did exactly that! She agreed to go back with the servant and became Isaac's wife, though she had never met him. That is the same as His Church going to meet Jesus whom we have never met.
In time, Abraham died. Like her mother-in-law Sarah, Rebecca was also barren. Isaac prayed to God for her and Rebecca to conceived twins. The Lord told Rebecca what would happen to her sons:
"Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger." (Genesis 25:24, NIV)
They named the twins Esau and Jacob. Esau was born first, but Jacob became Rebecca's favorite. When the boys grew up, Jacob tricked his older brother into selling his birthright for a bowl of stew. Later, his father Isaac was dying and his eyesight had failed; Rebecca helped Jacob deceive Isaac into blessing him instead of Esau. She put goatskins on Jacob's hands and neck to imitate Esau's hairy skin. When Isaac touched it, he blessed Jacob, thinking it was really Esau.
Rebecca's deception caused strife between Esau and Jacob. Many years later, however, Esau forgave Jacob. When Rebecca died, she was buried in the family tomb, a cave near Mamre in Canaan, the resting place of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, and her daughter-in-law Leah.
Neither Esau nor Jacob was fit to be the Royal Bloodline to Jesus, therefore, Jacob had to be changed inside and out to receive such honor. Next Post.
Post N Part F His Two Sons
Ishmael and Isaac
Isaac and Ishmael: Represents Spirit and Flesh . In Galatians 4:28-29, Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. :29 But as then he that was born after the flesh (Ishmael) persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, (Isaac) even so it is now.
Gal 4:30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: (Hagar and Ishmael) for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. (Sarah and Isaac)
Gal 4:31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, (Hagar and Ishmael) but of the free. (Isaac)
Paul makes it clear that Ishmael represents the believer’s first birth (the flesh) and Isaac represents the second birth (the Spirit). Ishmael was “born of the flesh” because Abraham and Sarah decided on their own to beget a son . Isaac was “born of the Spirit” because by that time his parents were both “too old” and only God’s power could have brought conception and birth.
When you trust Jesus Christ, you experience a miracle birth from God (John 1:11-13), and it is the work of the Holy Spirit of God (John 3:1-8). Abraham represents faith, and Sarah represents grace (Gal. 4:24-26), so Isaac was born “by grace … through faith” (Eph. 2:8-9). This is the only way a lost sinner can enter the family of God (John 3:16-18). And no less a miracle.
It is worth noting that, in the biblical record, God rejected Cain and chose Abel (Gen. 4:1-15). He rejected Ishmael, Abraham’s firstborn, and chose Isaac. He bypassed Esau, Isaac’s firstborn, and chose Jacob (Rom. 9:8-13), and He chose Ephraim instead of Manasseh (Gen. 48). In Egypt, the Lord condemned all the firstborn (Ex. 11–12) and spared only those who were “twice-born” because they were protected by faith in the blood of the lamb. This is a type of the second birth.
Isaac pictures the child of God not only in his birth but also in the joy that he brought. Isaac means “laughter,” and this time it was not the laughter of unbelief (Gen. 18:9-15). In the parables recorded in Luke 15, Jesus emphasized the joy that results when lost sinners repent and come to the Lord. The shepherd rejoiced when he found the lost sheep, and the woman rejoiced when she found the lost coin, and they both asked their friends to rejoice with them. The father rejoiced when his prodigal son came home, and he invited the neighbors to a feast so they could share in his joy. There is even joy in heaven when sinners turn to God (Luke 15:7, 10).
Nowhere do we read that Ishmael caused great joy in Abraham’s home. Abraham loved his son and wanted the best for him (Gen. 17:18). From before his birth, Ishmael was a source of painful trouble (Gen. 16), and after he matured, he caused even greater conflict in the family (21:9). The old nature is not able to produce the fruit of the Spirit, no matter how hard it tries (Gal. 5:16-26).
