Assessing Cognitive Awareness in Residents: Alert vs. Cognitively Aware
I discuss how to evaluate whether residents are cognitively capable of being delegated tasks. I explain that alertness—being awake and responsive—is different from cognitive awareness. I share an example of a cheerful 100-year-old resident who was very alert and engaging but lacked cognitive awareness, as she didn't know where she was, what day it was, or who was visiting her. Through this story, I highlight the importance of distinguishing between these two different aspects of cognitive function when assessing residents.
