“But are they learning enough?”
It’s one of the biggest questions parents ask when looking for preschool.
And honestly? I get it.
You want your child ready for kindergarten.
But kindergarten teachers aren’t just hoping children know letters and numbers anymore. They need children who can function in a classroom environment.
Children who can:
✔️ Speak up respectfully
✔️ Solve small problems independently
✔️ Handle disappointment without melting down
✔️ Listen during group time
✔️ Transition between activities
✔️ Use words instead of reactions
✔️ Build friendships and work through conflicts
That kind of learning doesn’t happen from stacks of worksheets.
It happens through play.
Through routines.
Through conversations.
Through messy sensory play, imaginative games, outdoor exploration, and daily interactions with peers.
Yes — we learn letters, sounds, writing skills, math concepts, science, and early literacy every day.
But the deeper learning is happening underneath all of it.
Because confident, capable children thrive academically too.

A few new invitations to play have made their way into our classroom lately… and the children have been LOVING them!
In our science center, we added a magnetic creation board using everyday materials like screws, washers, nuts, chains, and paperclips. The children have been busy designing little people, patterns, and inventions while exploring what objects magnets attract (and don’t!). We’ve also been using our magnetic matching rings to experiment with attracting, repelling, color patterns, and introducing new vocabulary like magnetic, repel, attract, force, connect, and balance 🧲
Our family living area got the sweetest new wooden puppet theater complete with adorable finger puppets. The storytelling happening there has been pure magic. Role play helps children build language, confidence, imagination, social skills, problem solving, and emotional expression… all through PLAY 💛
And outside… Mr. Rob built us a beautiful new mud kitchen! 🥹
Now the children can create mud pies, soups, flower potions, bug stew, seashell cakes, rock recipes, and all sorts of outdoor masterpieces. Gems, flowers, fish, fruit slices, bugs, herbs, mud, water, and imagination? Endless possibilities.
This is why I love early childhood so much… learning doesn’t have to look like worksheets to be meaningful. Sometimes it looks like muddy hands, magnetic experiments, puppet shows, and a pretend soup made with dandelions and rocks 💗
