Did you know that July is Sarcoma Awareness Month?

Last week, we highlighted several of the most common cancers diagnosed in dogs, including osteosarcoma, the most common type of bone cancer in canines.

Osteosarcoma develops from bone-forming cells and is most often found in the distal radius(wrist), proximal humerus (shoulder), distal femur (knee), or proximal tibia (knee). Less commonly, it can also occur in the jaw.

Common signs of osteosarcoma include persistent limping that does not improve, swelling of a limb, pain or stiffness with movement, decreased appetite, and, in some cases, fractures of the affected bone.

If your dog develops any of these signs, it's important to schedule an examination with your veterinarian. Diagnostic testing, such as radiographs (X-rays), blood work, a bone aspirate or biopsy, and advanced imaging, may be recommended to determine the cause and develop the most appropriate treatment plan.
