Phillis Wheatley, who was sold as a child into slavery in the mid-1700s, was a poet and the first Black woman published in America. She was also a notable apologist, abolitionist, and missionary who garnered attention from politicians, including George Washington, for her religious writings which praised God and spotlighted issues of slavery.

Charles Young
Charles Young was the first black U.S. National Park Superintendent. The 3rd African American to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Young was appointed acting superintendent of Sequoia & General Grant national parks in 1903, which were managed by the military then. Young implemented sweeping road improvements to the parks, accomplishing more in one summer than the three previous officers had completed in three years.

She was the first African-American woman to obtain an international pilot’s license, soaring to new heights that Black people in the United States had never reached before. But as a Black woman in the 1920s, she faced many obstacles because of her race and gender. She would say that “the air is the only place free from prejudice.”
