Organization planning meetings to create coalition work towards the abolition of the death penalty

Join us for our second teach-in on January 18! We will be discussing Gaza’s history and how it became the world’s largest concentration camp, the link between the death penalty and genocide, and the global response to Israel’s genocide against the Palestinians.
About our Participants:
Dr. Maha Nassar
Dr. Maha Nassar is a cultural and intellectual historian of the twentieth-century Arab world, with a focus on Palestinian history. In 2018, her monograph “Brothers Apart: Palestinian Citizens of Israel and the Arab World” received a Palestine Book Award for academic titles. Her next book project is centered on telling the story of how Palestinian identity has been constructed and maintained under the conditions of statelessness and transnational dispersal.
Dr. Gerald Horne
Dr. Gerald Horne holds the Moores Professorship of History and African American Studies. His research has addressed issues of racism and how it intersects with settler colonialism, politics, civil rights, international relations, and war. Dr. Horne is the author of more than thirty books, which includes “The Apocalypse of Settler Colonialism: The Roots of Slavery, White Supremacy and Capitalism in Seventeenth Century North America and the Caribbean.”
Huwaida Arraf, Esq.
Huwaida Arraf is a Palestinian American human rights attorney and activist. She is Co-Founder of the Nobel Peace Prize nominated International Solidarity Movement, a Palestinian civil society-led movement which utilizes nonviolent direct action to confront and challenge Israeli military occupation and colonial violence. She was one of the primary organizers of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla and was traveling with it when it was lethally attacked by Israeli forces on 31 May 2010.
Michelle Smith
Michelle Smith is a criminal punishment system-impacted abolitionist and organizer. Michelle is the Co-Director of Missourians to Abolish the Death Penalty and the Founder and Director of Missouri Justice Coalition. Her organizing efforts extend to all facets of mass incarceration, including wrongful convictions, higher education for systems impacted people, humane and adequate healthcare, and decarceration.
Tania Siddiqi
Tania Siddiqi is the Coordinator for the Texas People’s Tribunal and the Palestine International teach-in Coordinator. Her forthcoming research article “Genocide, Punishment, and History: The ‘State’ of Texas and Judgement in Imperialist USA” explores the function of state-sanctioned violence against racialized peoples within the context of US imperialism and the Anglo-American colonization of Mexican Texas.
