Eric Winkle Brown on the De Havilland Vampire
The de Havilland Vampire was a clever early jet, built around a single Goblin turbojet in a compact central nacelle, with twin tail booms and a short exhaust to reduce thrust losses. Its light structure, clean handling and four 20mm Hispano cannon made it practical and adaptable. Eric “Winkle” Brown proved its naval potential on 3 December 1945, when he made the first carrier landing and take-off by a pure jet aircraft aboard HMS Ocean. He later flew Sea Vampires in flexible-deck trials, showing the same precision, nerve and technical judgement that defined his career.
The Luftwaffe’s Wings Darken Poland
The affair began with appalling efficiency. At 4:45 a.m. on September 1, 1939, Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on Westerplatte, while German armies crossed from East Prussia, Pomerania, Silesia, and Slovakia. Case White committed roughly 1.5 million men, 60 divisions, more than 2,000 tanks, nearly 900 bombers, and over 400 fighters. Polish mobilization was incomplete; its forces, dispersed along a long frontier, possessed few motorized formations and scarcely 300 aircraft. German radio-equipped armored columns, supported by Luftwaffe units, penetrated, severed communications, and pursued encirclements rather than frontal battle. Britain and France declared war on September 3, yet furnished no relief. Warsaw, reached on September 8, endured artillery and aerial bombardment before surrendering on September 28. The Soviet Union invaded from the east on September 17 under secret Molotov-Ribbentrop arrangements. Poland’s final operational formation capitulated on October 6—a swift campaign, and a thoroughly indecent beginning.
