Red paper wasps and yellowjackets generally have a similar body shape with the biggest difference being in their color. As stinging insects, they both pose a potential threat. While paper wasps are not an aggressive species by nature, they will sting if they are disturbed or their nest is threatened. It’s unusual for an impregnated paper wasp to sting, but it can happen. On the other hand, yellowjacket stings pose significant health risks to humans, as they are territorial and will sting if they are threatened. They are known to sting repeatedly and can cause allergic reactions. Both of these busy bugs frequent the eaves and attics of homes to build their nests. Although, contrary to popular beliefs, nests left behind by wasp populations that leave during the cold weather months are generally not reused by subsequent generations of wasps. Flowers, plant life, and places with abundant insects will attract paper wasps as it provides ample prey for both the developing and mature wasps. Yellowjackets can be classified as pollinators and can be beneficial as they eat beetle grubs, flies and other harmful pests. However, they are also known scavengers who eat meat, fish, and sugary substances. Paper wasps have their peak season in the springtime while yellowjackets are the most active in late summer and early autumn. As we go head first into the summer season, don't let these insects put a sting in your summer fun when Rumble can keep you and your loved ones protected! Happy April everyone!
This month, our bug blog is covering Earwigs. They are typically located near places that are cool and wet. Bathrooms, kitchens and other places where plumbing may be is usually where you will find them. On the outside of the home, Earwigs may be found in gardens, flower beds, or compost piles. Most types of earwigs generally prefer wet areas which are cooler and undisturbed as they find the atmosphere favorable for living and laying eggs. Earwigs can be a serious garden pest if the conditions are right as most species feed on decaying vegetation and thrive in wet soil.
