☀️ Spotlight on Skin Health: May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month ☀️
Did you know that skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US, but also one of the most preventable? With May being Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month, it’s the perfect time to commit to protecting the skin you’re in.
Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, but when detected early, the 5-year survival rate is 99%. Knowledge and daily protection truly are power.
Here is your quick guide to staying safe, sun-smart, and skin-nourished this season:
🛡️ The ABCDEs of Melanoma
Check your skin monthly for any moles that show these warning signs:
A - Asymmetry: One half of the mole doesn't match the other.
B - Border: Edges are irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined.
C - Color: Color varies from one area to another (shades of tan, brown, black, or even pink/blue).
D - Diameter: Melanomas are usually greater than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser) when diagnosed, though they can be smaller.
E - Evolving: A mole or skin lesion that looks different from the rest or is changing in size, shape, or color.
🧴 Level Up Your Sun Care (Naturally!)
Choose Broad-Spectrum Protection: Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every single day (even when it's cloudy!).
Go Mineral & Nourishing: If you love clean, natural skincare, look for a zinc-infused tallow sunscreen. Tallow’s fatty acid profile is remarkably close to human skin’s own sebum, making it highly biocompatible. It deeply nourishes and moisturizes your skin while the active mineral zinc blocks those UV rays!
Seek the Shade: Hang out in the shade, especially during peak UV hours between 10 AM and 4 PM.
Cover Up: Rock a wide-brimmed hat, UV-blocking sunglasses, and lightweight long sleeves.
🗓️ Your Action Item Today: Book that annual skin check with a dermatologist, and swap out an old, expired bottle of lotion for a clean, skin-loving alternative.
Let’s spread the word, not the sunburn. Tag a friend below to remind them to protect their skin today! 👇

Conference Summary
What an absolutely incredible weekend of inspiration, leadership, and community at the Rotary District Conference! Hearing from such a diverse and powerhouse lineup of speakers truly drove home the core of what it means to be a Rotarian.
From the very beginning, Michael Angelo Caruso set a dynamic tone for the weekend at the Opening Banquet, bringing his signature energy to kick off our time together. The momentum only grew on Saturday morning with Dr. Pilar Bradshaw and Frank King, who brought powerful, insightful perspectives to breakfast, followed later by UO’s own Coach Kelly Graves at lunch, injecting a healthy dose of team-building spirit and motivation straight from the hardwood.
The absolute pinnacle of the weekend, however, was Saturday’s historic and deeply moving evening banquet. Getting to hear from Jennifer Jones, Past Rotary International President, alongside Sylvia Whitlock, the historic first-ever woman club president, was a masterclass in groundbreaking leadership. Their stories served as a powerful reminder of how far the organization has come and the endless possibilities for the future.
Finally, closing out Sunday morning with Al Jubitz’s meaningful insights and Wyn Spiller’s brilliant Zone Presentation left everyone feeling deeply grounded, re-energized, and ready to take on new service projects back home.
It was a weekend packed with wisdom, heart, and actionable inspiration from start to finish—truly a memorable conference for everyone fortunate enough to attend! Rotary Club of Eugene After Hours

Today’s presentations were both impactful in very different ways.
🎤 Frank King brought humor, honesty, and an incredibly important message about mental health and su***de prevention. Hearing that over 47,000 people lost their lives to su***de last year is heartbreaking. His reminder was simple but powerful — if you are struggling with mental illness, depression, or hopelessness, please talk to someone. You are not alone, and there are people who care and want to help.

🩺 Pilar Bradshaw shared a thoughtful presentation on vaccinations and the importance of understanding the science and research behind medical decisions. One of the biggest takeaways was the value of seeking information from trusted medical professionals and credible scientific sources so we can make informed decisions based on accurate information.
Thank you both for taking the time to educate, encourage conversation, and share important perspectives. Rotary Club of Eugene After Hours
