Cervical cancer is caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which is a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI). HPV is extremely common and almost every person who has ever had s*x is at risk for contracting HPV. It can take years after s*xual contact for abnormal cells and cancers to develop. While most strains of HPV do not cause cancer, routine screening is important.

Women ages 21 to 64 can receive free pap tests to screen for cervical cancer. Women who need treatment may qualify for free follow-up services, including women diagnosed prior to using this program.

A pap test looks for changes in cervical cells that might lead to cancer. Pap tests can find cancer in its earliest stage when it is easier to treat. There are rarely any signs or symptoms for cervical cancer.
