The floodwaters have pulled back in Reynolds County, and the wreckage they left tells the story. Whole campers carried off. A family's car found packed with river mud, hundreds of yards from where it was parked. It all happened around 3 a.m. Friday, while families slept along the river.

Gwendlyn Ponzau is counting her losses ten and twenty dollars at a time. But she is counting something else, too: everyone in her family made it out. The crews who made that possible went into the same current in heavy gear, and for several minutes Friday, dispatchers could not find three firefighters swept downstream. They found each other by whistle. All three were pulled to safety.
