I've been thinking a lot about nonprofit culture lately. Not the mission. The culture.
Somewhere along the way, we accepted a whole list of things as "just part of nonprofit work." Doing more with less.
Leaders who can't truly unplug because no one else can answer the questions.
Boards that care deeply but unintentionally rely on the Executive Director to carry the institutional knowledge, the donor relationships, the strategy, and half the operations.
Staff who feel guilty taking PTO because they know someone else will absorb the work.
None of these things happen because people don't care. They happen because we've gradually accepted them as normal.
They're not. They're warning signs that the organization has become dependent on people instead of systems.
If we want sustainable missions, we have to build sustainable organizations, and that starts by questioning the things we've stopped questioning.
