We’d like to raise awareness about an apparently new form of respiratory disease that has been identified in dogs in Oregon. The disease spreads in a way that suggests viral transmission, but a specific pathogen has not yet been identified.

Effects of this disease are:
Chronic mild-moderate tracheobronchitis (inflammation of the trachea) for 6-8 weeks.
Chronic pneumonia that is minimally or not responsive to antibiotics.
Acute pneumonia that rapidly becomes severe and often leads to poor outcomes in as few as 24-36 hours.

We’d like dog owners to be aware of this disease but not worried about it. It has only affected a small portion of the dog population in the areas where it has been seen.

Some practical precautions dog owners can take that can help protect their dogs against this and other diseases are:
Keep your dog(s) up to date on all vaccines.
Limit your dog(s) interaction with other dogs, especially at events with dogs from many regions (dog shows, breed club events, etc.)
