On this day, May 27, 1781, Italy lost one of its great scientific minds: Giovanni Battista Beccaria, the Piarist monk whose work helped shape modern physics.
A master experimenter and a Fellow of the Royal Society, Beccaria championed the new electrical theories of Benjamin Franklin, mentored future giants like Lagrange, and helped bring Newtonian science into Italian universities.
His landmark works—from Elettricismo artificiale e naturale to the Gradus Taurinensis—placed Italy at the forefront of Enlightenment science.
A reminder that Italian genius has always illuminated the world.
