Why You Shouldn't Use Essential Oils In Candles - Candle Business Boss 12/08/2023

A very good question was brought up to me earlier this week. Do I use essential oils in my candles? HECK no! This is a very good article, but here are my main reasons:
1. Essential oils are VOLATILE when heated. An overload of fragrance is a recipe for an out of control fire. If you are only using essential oils in candles and the scent is strong enough for you to think, wow that’s a great smelling candle, it is overloaded and will likely combust.
2. “But I see large companies making essential oil candles!” Yes, and no. Look closely at the label. I guarantee it says essential oil blend. That means they can put one drop of essential oil in their fragrance and get away with marketing it as a “natural” candle. The same principle applies when they label as “soy blend wax”. It’s mostly paraffin with a few flakes of soy. And they’re not regulated or required to disclose their capacity amounts.
3. Burning essential oils may oxidize them which is dangerous and can have health implications.

Essential oils have benefits and I use them in other applications myself, but they really don’t belong in candles.

Candle Safety!
This is a candle someone purchased from Aldi. Unfortunately, this can happen with any candle, which is why trimming the wick before every burn is so important! We carefully calculate oil ratios to prevent incidents like this, but it’s always best to err on the side of caution. Safety first 😊
