Hidden beyond the veil of sleep, where moonlight drips like silver nectar and time forgets its name, lies Queen Mab’s Midnight Dream Garden.

Whimsical Cats & Rediscovering Joy
At some point earlier this year, I thought I was done making these little cat pieces.
I had started to think of them as something less serious than my other work, something I’d moved on from. But lately I’ve been realizing how much I missed them. How much I enjoy the whole process of creating them.
There’s something I really love about the constant scanning and foraging and finding images that speak in that strange, whimsical language I’ve come to know so well. Then choosing paint colors that bring out a bit more life or magic. Aging the wood until it looks like it stepped out of time.
But what I may love most is seeing which one people are drawn to, how they laugh or pause and say, “This one reminds me of my cat,” or when they share their discovery with a friend, “Look at this one!”
They’re small, yes, but they carry their own weight. They’ve become one of the most popular series I’ve ever made, especially on small wood frames and wooden postcards. And more than that, they feel necessary. A little levity. A little charm. A little reminder of something softer and gentler.
I’m currently working on some of the largest and most layered pieces I’ve ever created—complex, mixed media works that tell longer stories. But these small cat portraits still feel like an important part of what I make. I think they will be around for quite some time.
Here are a few new friends from the studio.
