In South Carolina, students will no longer get minimum grades.

Gov. Henry McMaster has signed a new law eliminating so-called "grade floors" in South Carolina schools, a practice that allowed teachers to assign students a minimum grade higher than what they actually earned. The change takes effect next school year, and districts that continue the practice risk losing 10% of their state funding.

PINEHURTS ELEMENTARY ACADEMY — Administrators unveiled a districtwide "Growth Mindset" initiative on January 6, applying the framework solely to enrollment by raising the average classroom from 24 students to 67 over the spring semester.

Superintendent Mrs. Larson explained that capacity is "not a fixed trait" and that any room insisting it is full simply "hasn't tried yet." "We don't say 'this class is too big,' we say 'this class is too big yet,'" added principal Mr. Whitfield, addressing teachers from a hallway because the staff lounge now seats a third-grade section.

The framework was deemed a success after the only teacher who voiced concern was praised for her tremendous personal growth in learning to take attendance for ninety minutes.
