The most recent Illinois Department of Employment Security jobs report showed a loss of 1,700 nonfarm jobs for the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area from April 2025 to April 2026.
But across the nation, economists have expressed concerns about the reliability of Bureau of Labor Statistics data due to a lack of manpower amongst the scaled-back federal agency tasked with fielding data about the country’s economic health.

The Sangamon County Board voted 15-8 to reject a proposed 20-acre solar farm adjacent to a residential subdivision on the west side of Springfield, even as the board’s lawyer warned Summit Ridge Energy, the petitioner, may be able to sue the board and get the solar panels installed anyway.

The Christian County Board expects to formally discuss a proposed data center for the first time on June 16, with official votes on plans by North Carolina-based Eagle Rock Partners expected in the coming months.
The potential data center would be located two miles west of Taylorville and 10 times more expensive to build than CyrusOne's project in Sangamon County, which is expected to begin construction this summer.
