Stuttering isn’t usually the hardest part. The way people respond to it can be. It can feel like the world is against us when people interrupt, laugh, finish our sentences, or assume that speaking differently means having less to say. Even well-meaning comments like “just breathe” or “think about what you want to say” can make someone feel dismissed instead of supported.

But that can change. When we advocate for ourselves and help others understand what respectful support looks like, we can shift how people respond to stuttering. Support begins with respect and the willingness to listen.
