So, I'm into doing this now (check the video!). Cutting down combo amps into heads. Remember those little combo amps that would come with guitar starter packs or even some decently loud 15 or 25 watt combo with an 8" or 10" speaker? Well, if you were to send that output to a 1x12, 2x12 or 4x12 (or anything equivalent) you'd hear a VERY different monster. Took my 90s Peavey Audition 110 transtube combo, cut it down, replaced some filter caps, replaced the 2 prong cord to a 3 prong, and now I've got a reliable, solid state/tube sounding 25w MONSTER with spring reverb. The Peavey Transtube series is amazing (Audition, Envoy, Bandit) and very affordable. Peavey has always been a stellar company and a personal favorite of mine. This amp was serving as a coffee table in my bedroom; now it's more portable, able to plug into any speaker, and fu***ng wails.
