Thank you to our U Of O scholarship recipients for last night presentations. Maryn’s talk focused on the debris flows that take place during heavy rainstorms, commonly referred to as landslides. The talk focused on how they occur, what geologic conditions make them possible, and how forest fires and other natural disasters can worsen their effects, making them much more devastating. These studies can help us create temporary barriers along known debris paths in order to mitigate damage to the affected areas and send most of the debris away from urban developments. Asif’s talk focused on his studies looking into the elasticity of different large scale geological formations and those varying materials change the landscapes around us as well as how they ca impact earthquake behavior. The subduction zones on the Oregon Coast have a wide variety of elastic materials that allow us great insight into how tectonic pressures can be measured in a much broader way.
