New (school) year, same goal: Get home safe!

With school back in session, make sure to talk to your children about bus safety, emergency contacts, and staying aware in public. ✏️

Preparation doesn’t stop when school starts! 🚌

Do you have a plan for your pets in an emergency? In case you are not home when disaster strikes, arrange in advance for a neighbor to check on or transport your pets. Make sure your pets are always wearing properly fitted collars with personal identification, rabies and license tags.
Pack a go-bag for your pets:
-Pet carrier for each pet
-Two week supply of food and water
-Non-spill food and water bowls
-Pet first-aid kit
-Cat litter box and litter
-Plastic bags for waste disposal
-Paper towels
-Disinfectants
-Leashes/collars/harnesses
-Blankets, toys and treats

Kids are returning to school! 🏫 That means more pedestrians and buses on the road. It also means it's time to update your family's emergency communications plan.

Emergencies can happen at any time. Does your family know how to get in touch with each other if you are not all together? If you haven't yet, we recommend you create a communications plan that includes:

➡️ Your child's school contact info
➡️ The contact info for all the adults responsible for the child
➡️ Everyone's primary care doctor(s)
➡️ An out of town contact who can act as a single point of contact for everyone
➡️ A list of every family members' medical alerts/medications/allergies
➡️ 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆.

Heavy rain across the central states may cause flash flooding today. Remember: you never know how deep or dangerous flood waters really are. Avoid driving or walking through them.

Hurricane Season Preparation Tip �
Before a hurricane is forecast to make landfall in your area, do this:
-De-clutter your home's drains and gutters
-Bring in outside furniture
-Consider installing hurricane shutters to protect your windows

Fire weather in the Pacific Northwest and Northern California means an increased risk of wildfires. Take steps to prevent wildfires with tips from the U.S. Fire Administration: usfa.fema.gov/wui/outreach/before-wui-fire.html.

There is a risk of severe thunderstorms in Kansas and Missouri today. Keep yourself and loved ones safe—make sure you pay attention to alerts and warnings.

During severe weather, it's best to stay inside in a safe place, away from walls and windows.

New Mexico: Expecting heavy rain? Beware of flash flooding - especially in areas that recently experienced wildfires.

Burn scars leave the ground unable to absorb water as it once could.

Have different ways to receive alerts and listen to local officials.

As heavy rains are expected in the Central Plains to the Great Lakes, make sure you are prepared in case your area is affected by flash flooding.

You might have to act fast! Know your evacuation route and the fastest way to higher ground.

We are in the middle of the Atlantic hurricane season! In addition to basic survival supplies, your household emergency kit should include items to address your specific needs.

For example, if you take medication, talk to your doctor about how you can create an emergency supply.

Understanding the difference between a flood watch and a warning can help keep you safe during severe weather.
