Our Story
Help us honor the final resting place of some amazing veterans.
The Washington State Soldiers Home Cemetery in Orting was established in 1909 as the first state soldier’s cemetery. It sits on 4.75 acres and is the final resting place of veterans from all over the United States. Among the 2, 265 burial sites are veterans that served in the Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War. Four of these special veterans received the Medal of Honor, America's highest and most prestigious personal military decoration awarded in recognition of their great acts of valor.
Just a few years back, this soldier’s cemetery was in bad shape due to neglect. Grown trees had engulfed many of the headstones; some were sunk into the ground, misaligned, or simply in such bad shape they were literally blank. Through fundraising efforts and State Legislative grants, repairs began. Headstones have been restored, trees have been trimmed/crowned and the first 140 feet of roadway at the Cemetery entrance has been paved. The remaining roadway within the cemetery will be realigned and paved by 2020. Of special note, a new 35 ft. flagpole was installed and dedicated in May, with the efforts of many volunteers and donations and flies proudly over this hallowed ground today.
