I've been thinking about how often we tell ourselves, "They're doing fine together," simply because nothing bad has happened.
Meanwhile, the dog has started getting up and walking away every time the kids hug them. The toddler has figured out that throwing snacks on the floor gets the dog's attention. Everyone laughs when the dog steals a toy, and before long nobody is really sure where the boundaries are anymore.
None of those moments automatically mean something is wrong. But they do tell a story.
A lot of dog bites happen in families who would have said their dog was "great with kids." Most of the time it isn't because the dog is mean or the kids are doing something terrible. It's because small signs of stress were missed, or everyone assumed the dog was comfortable when they were actually just tolerating the situation.
That's why I think this topic matters so much.
Teaching kids how to interact with dogs respectfully, and teaching adults what their dog's body language is actually saying, can completely change the atmosphere in a home. The dog doesn't have to keep asking for space in ways no one notices. The kids learn how to earn trust instead of accidentally creating stress. Parents spend less time saying, "Leave the dog alone!" because everyone understands the expectations from the beginning.
